Saving Bosnia’s Rivers

News Coverage for the Bosnian War’s 30th Anniversary

In a country still deeply divided after a war that culminated in genocide, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s three main ethnicities—Serbs, Croats, and Bosniaks—have organized across ethnic lines to prevent the construction of small dams on Europe's last free-flowing rivers. Their fight has been a struggle. Police have violently cracked down on protests. Activists have had to fight tooth and nail in the courts. But with the July passage of a new law that bans construction of small dams in a large part of the country, they have had recent success. Still, the fight is not over in a country rife with corruption and political manipulation. This documentary short profiles several of the impressive activists who hope to preserve Bosnia’s stunning rivers for generations to come.
